ITINERARY

Adventure Timetable

Your guides will adjust the itinerary based on conditions, below is a taste of what you can expect.

Your Hurley’s Fly Fishing Adventures to Christmas Island includes most costs, so all you need to do is make sure you have your gear ready and get to the airport.

For Southern travellers, as the Fiji Air flight from Nadi to Christmas Island leaves at 11.59PM on Tuesday, you need to ensure your flight from Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane arrives in Nadi, Fiji, several hours prior, and our Northern friends leave at a more civilised time via Honolulu.

The FA flight arrives at CXI, home to around 5000 locals, at around 6.30am, after losing two hours on the dateline, and from Hawaii at around 3pm. Members from Ikari House will be there to pick you up, via minibus and will transport you on the leg to our accommodation at London. This will take around 40 minutes, and be a real eye opener to how the island lives. It is 3rd world stuff at times, so take it all in.

Ikari House is without question the best accommodation on the island, but with that said, it simply means clean, comfortable, air conditioners that work, hot showers, and great food. So don’t expect the Hilton, but it is literally perfect for your every need, you’ll love it.

Most days will start between 5.30-8.30, depending on the tides and what you want to happen, before the guide takes you on one of the islands traditional outrigger styled boats or our newer centre console, into the largest sand flats lagoon in the world!

Usually returning between 4 and 5pm, so good long fishing days that will leave you ready for a refreshing drink and some fresh sashimi… I know it sounds terrible!

Initially you will be blind to the fish, but just trust the guide and do whatever he says. Eventually though, you will start to see the fish, understand the retrieve techniques, and catch more and more of them. By the end of the week you will be an ‘expert’!

On most days you can see and cast at over a hundred to 200 bones every day, not all massive, but even a pound bonefish will run you 50 metres into the backing! When you get a bone that is 4 to 8 pound, and they have caught 15 pounders, then you will know you’re alive, and so will your gear!

You will be tired at the end of the day, so when you return to the house, shout yourself a cold beer, and don’t forget to shout the guide a drink, Then after eating your entrée of fish bites, sashimi and another cold beer, then tucking into fresh crays, local fish, rice, salad and potatoes, and another cold beer looking over the ocean at the setting sun, you might have an early night… or stay up and enjoy, but be mindful… there is another week of those in a row… Enjoy…

Lunch is usually a hearty salad and cold meat sandwich and snacks. Bottled water is provided free, but beer and soft drinks are at your cost on an honesty system.

Again it is up to you, and please discuss your requirements with your guide, the head guide at the end of the day, even Tess in the kitchen, but we aim to fish the lagoon by boat on most occasions, with at least one day on the ‘ocean side’, which most anglers really appreciate the difference. It is a 1.5hr truck ride, but well worth the effort. The other option is the land locked lagoons, but just chat with the staff about what you want to achieve.

Everything is about communication, if you tell them what you would like to happen, they will all try to accommodate. They are lovely people, just ask, and they will help. The last day, Wednesday, unfortunately our Northern Hemisphere clients depart early for their flight, while the Southerners have an optional half day fishing, as you will need to leave Ikari at around 1pm. It is not included, so you will need to pay direct for the guide and boat yourself, usually around $300 all up for the group, or just sleep in, pack up and relax, not a bad choice really!

The Fiji Airways flight leaves at 4pm and arrives in Nadi at 6.30pm. Make your way through customs and continue directly through the corridor, straight past all the shops and you exit the building. There will be a number of minibuses and coaches. One will have Gateway Hotel on it, and is a free shuttle service.

Your overnight, twin share room will have been arranged prior but you will need to settle the account for any meals or alcohol.

Again extra nights can be arranged here at very reasonable rates if required, around $70/140, particularly important if flying back to Melbourne, as flights leave Thursday… you poor thing, another day in paradise!

It will be a great trip!
